When litter hit the bins, everybody wins

The Littery
Latvia (Riga)

The Littery is Latvia’s answer to reducing the man-made problem of litter waste with the most global of incentives: money. Using a combination of incentive-based conditioning and the power of the Internet of Things, the company has reframed litter into an e-lottery – in other words, treating the cause rather than the symptoms.

With plans to rollout to 50 cities in the next five years, partner cities will see their usual litter bins replaced with a new device that operates as bin, collection point and deposit return scheme. Citizens who sort their litter correctly get an e-lottery ticket, reinforcing the right behaviour for effective recycling.
