Music for the deaf

Sencity
Netherlands (Breda)

Sencity is a training programme run by the Skyway Foundation in which young deaf and hard-of-hearing people organise sense-stimulating music events from Chile to South Africa.

Music is so much more than sounds. It is emotion translated into noise. Sencity’s series of music events are designed to inspire and delight deaf people, as well as all people, by having elements that touch all the senses – aromas, light shows, special foods, a vibrating dance floor and sign-dancers. For a young deaf person, working on an event in which you do something completely different, and are encouraged to develop your talents, raises awareness and allows voices to be heard.

Through Sencity Kids, deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing children come together and learn from one another and about senses. Various workshops teach the children about sense-stimulation and how it is to miss a certain sense and that this, instead of a limitation, can also be seen as a talent and inspiration. After the workshops there is a sense-stimulating music event that end the fun and informative day.

Skyway Foundation also run training programmes in which people are trained in ‘The Art of Possibilizing’, as well as body language workshops conducted by deaf trainers. People are trained to avoid problems, but most inventions are made because there is a problem to be solved. ‘Possibilizing’ is to think and act out possibilities, without limiting oneself, in every situation. Sencity hopes to create long-lasting communities of ‘possibilizers’.
