Sierra Leone ()
WAYout offers free training and facilities in digital media, music, design and arts to street youth and disadvantaged young people in Sierra Leone. WAYout reaches out to young people sidelined and disempowered, treating them as individuals, not statistics and is not time restricted. We know it can take two or more years for long term street youth to start engaging- up to five years to really get stuck in to learning so we have no time limit and no age limit. WAYout works in two basic ways- either by encouraging confidence and self worth and therefore reengagement with family and other forms of education or by training people to a professional standard so they can earn a living through their creativity. We have many members working in media, making money from their music or design work. We have worked with over 3000 young people and made films that have won awards in film festivals internationally or been broadcast on TV. Our long term plans are to reach out to more people, we have just opened a small branch in Kissi Town, the old refugee centre just outside Freetown and we want to see more people into employment or making a living.
