THRIFT Volume II

THRIFT Volume II
(Pending editorial review)
United Kingdom (London)
THRIFT is concerned with sustainability in the fields of art, design & fashion. THRIFT Volume I, a publication created by Beatriz Maués & Will Grundy, was published in May 2018 and is now stocked in several art book shops worldwide including The Photographers Gallery. THRIFT intends to celebrate quality over quantity and to encourage deep thought on today’s consumerist culture. The project highlights style as a form of expression and information of the impacts the fashion industry has on the planet. It also urges the audience to consider sacrificing the need for fast fashion and consider less impactful ways of self expression. THRIFT Volume I launched with an exhibition of photographs and a video installation of a now deactivated 200 hectares landfill in South America entitled “Lixão”, presented alongside sculptures made with second hand clothing. The launch as well as the exhibition were successful in both turn out and press. It was reviewed by several art magazines and was highly celebrated on social media. This is why we want give this project continuity and create momentum and openess around a conversation that to us seems imperative and very pressing in 2019. These are the projects that will compose THRIFT Vol II: -Sustainability in Architecture and Dress: A visual study of Amazonian indigenous tribe HUNI KUIN KAXINAWÁ using fine art photography, by photographer Layla Motta. -CLASSIC DRESS: a grid-like photographic layout exploring the taboo in repeating dress, by Beatriz Maués. -GOOD DYE: an interview with plant die expert Flora Arbuthnott of Plants and Colour supported by photos of some of her processes. -OBRONI WAWU: A visual study of the second hand trade in Ghana (literally meaning ‘white men’s dead clothes’), by Will Grundy) THRIFT Vol. II: An Exhibition showcasing photographic work from all of the projects listed above bringing sustainability within a community to the spotlight, opening in October 2019 in London.

Bio

I'm a stylist, costume designer and creative director living in London. I grew up in Brazil. My father is from the city of Maués, in the Amazon. My background has stimulated my desire to explore ways in which we can reduce our footprint within our workspace and practices. Learning to collaborate with other artists has showed me the power of widening a conversation's reach. I believe the artists I collaborate with can bring up new discussions and broaden the influence on me and my generation as well as the younger ones. I feel responsible to take action but have no doubt that I can not move mountains on my own.
