This project critiques the social, cultural, ecological and economic issues within the curent fashion industry and the greater capitalist system of overconsumption of our time, and looks at ways in which women gloablly are linked and affected by the abuse and oppression of nature by this system. Through the lens of fashion, one of the largest, most polluting and oppresive industries in the world, this project aims to identify material solutions for a more sustainable fashion future. Two garments constructed to illustrate alternative leather-like skins were grown form mycelium and kombucha networks. An algae vinyl-like bioplastic material was created and a yarn extruded of the same algae material, which was used to assemble the third garment. The fanzine includes interviews with changemakers within land stewardship and preserving indigenous craftsmanship, advocating biodiversity and animal rights, and sustainable fashion futures. The garments mirror in their form, material properties and story the thoughts and words of each of the women interviewed. Shakti Yuga ultimately aims to question the impact of our habits of consumption on the environment, humans and non-human organisms and disrupt the way in which we consume fashion, advocating for smart design, new material solutions and a more empathetic approach to design for a greater fashion future.

Textile artist and crafter working with natural dyes and pigments as well as bio-fabrication of materials and research in algae bio-plastics, kombucha and mycelium leather skins. In my practice I seek to create a dialogue between humans and non-human organisms in order to spark empathy and counter toxic systems of overconsumption perpetuated by the fashion and textile industry. Through this work I also pose the exploration of viable alternatives or solutions to polluting processes used by these industries in order to advocate integrative, symbiotic and empathetic design. My aesthetic is inspired by natural forms, sacred spiritual practices, alchemy and traditional crafting practices merged with digital fabricaton and alternative or experimental materials and fabrication processes. Through my work I aim to merge cloth with earth, and mirror the deep connection and inherent relation which exists shelled under our second skin (clothing) with land, space, time and the interconnected web of being.
