Lifelong learning through peer groups

Enrol Yourself is redesigning lifelong learning by harnessing the power of peer groups. We run the #LearningMarathon: 6-month peer-led learning accelerator programmes designed to integrate alongside work. We bring groups of 10–12 people together to pool their resources, skills, creativity and enthusiasm, each working toward an outcome they couldn’t achieve alone. We are currently piloting a decentralised scaling model where we train and support local facilitators to initiate and run a peer group where they are. Facilitators might be coaches, educators or community keen beans! The idea is to put power into the hands of communities to make lifelong learning happen for themselves, without the need to 'purchase' it from institutions. The problem in the UK (and beyond!) is that participation in adult education is decreasing at a time when a rapidly changing future of work is increasingly demanding that we learn continuously alongside work. In the long-term this mismatch is catastrophic because it will further widen the inequality gap. The key barriers to participation in adult education, as reported by the UK government, are time, money and attitude (e.g. lack of confidence). Existing lifelong learning options are insufficient to tackle these barriers. Traditional education in inflexible and expensive. Online learning tackles some barriers but requires superhuman levels of self motivation to complete courses and isn't conducive developing complex, human and applied capabilities such as collaborative problem solving. Growing self employment leaves an increasing proportion of the population with no workplace training provision. Enrol Yourself is innovative because it tackles these barriers to participation simultaneously. Our full peer-to-peer approach means we can reduce the cost of face-to-face, transformative learning, and the social environment gives the support needed for learners to self-lead in a way it is near impossible to do as a lone individual.
