Israel (Haifa)
Instead of using eye tracking to sell us things, as advertisers do, or hijacking our attention for hands-free fun, as game developers do, an Israeli start-up is using data to diagnose. By designing an algorithm that enables low-res cameras to track tiny eye movements, Umoove has created the first ever pure software face and eye tracking for any mobile device.
Initially working in the ‘brain-training’ space with the aim of improving attention span and focus, they have moved on to the early diagnosis of mental and neurological disorders, focusing on eye tracking as a window into our inner functioning. Just a millisecond of micro movement can be indicative of conditions such as concussion, autism, ADHD, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Before long a simple download will turn the phone in your pocket into an even smarter advanced medical diagnostic tool, and perhaps even deliver therapies.
